Cornwall MPs challenged as ‘spineless’ on threats to cottage hospitals and NHS cuts
All six of Cornwall’s Conservative MPs have been challenged to say if they support the draft plan for the future of the NHS in Cornwall.
Cornwall Liberal Democrats are demanding that local MPs say where they stand on these changes and if they will defend local health services. Adam Paynter Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Cornwall Council said, “Cornwall’s Tory MPs have been deafeningly silent on the flawed STP process that will possibly lead to the closure of Cornwall’s Cottage hospitals.”
The process has been criticised for a lack of local consultation and secrecy in a national report today by The King’s Fund health charity.
A summary of the draft case for the NHS “Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly” was published in September, that indicated possible plans for the closure of community hospitals and cuts of £221m in NHS spending in Cornwall.
Concerns have been raised that Cornwall’s unique geography and needs are going to be ignored in order to meet the shortfall in funding from the Government.
“In spite of assurances for increased funding for the health service, including by members of the Government during the European Referendum campaign, the shortfall is not going to be met and Cornwall’s MPs are standing idly by whilst patient care suffers”.
“Liberal Democrats in Cornwall will continue to fight for the resources that are needed for the health of our local communities. Cornwall cannot rely on its spineless Tory MPs to stand up to the Government and the Treasury.” Said Cllr Paynter.
